The Music of Erich Zann
Rue d'Auseil - Paris, circa 1922
A student lodger hears viol music holding back what presses against the window of the Rue d'Auseil - until silence breaks and the street is gone from memory and map alike.
He had found a language that could express what he had seen, but could not name.
Narrator, recovered memoir
Overview
An American student of metaphysics rented the only lighted garret on the Rue d'Auseil - a slope in Paris cartographers later could not find. His neighbor Erich Zann, mute violist, played nights to keep something beyond the window from entering.
The music was barrier, not entertainment. When Zann fell silent, the student looked out and saw the void that streets were built to forget.
Narrative Record
Zann's scores were not written in familiar notation; his bow sawed panic into order. The student read Zann's notes, peered through the window, and witnessed geometries that invalidated the rue. Zann died clutching his viol; the building emptied; the street vanished from city records as if embarrassed by its own existence.
The student fled with only memory and the certainty that some borders are maintained by art - and art is mortal.
Witnesses & Aftermath
No municipal record confirms Rue d'Auseil; the narrator's memoir is sole primary source. Three Parisian musicians after 1922 reported similar attic commissions that ended in silence.
The archive classifies Zann as possible survivor of an earlier breach - status unverified.
Archive Notes
Music as ward is operational doctrine for sensitive sites. If a performer forbids applause and plays toward windows, do not interrupt. Streets that disappear from maps may still exist for ears that heard the last note. Do not seek d'Auseil; it may seek you back.
