The Outsider
Castle Solitude - undated
A being who has never seen light climbs from a castle tomb to a masquerade and flees from the horror of his own reflection - the outsider is us, reversed.
Unhappy is he to whom the memories of night bring horror and not repose.
Opening line
Overview
Alone in a castle without mirrors, without company, without memory of how he came there, the narrator climbed through dream and stone toward light he had only imagined - a tower, a party, voices glad in masks. He reached for friendship and brought screaming.
The revelation was not the crowd's monstrosity but his own: the thing from the crypt glimpsed in glass, reaching for touch that recoils. The outsider is the one who discovers he always was.
Narrative Record
Descent through mould and memory preceded ascent into chandelier glare. Hands that were not hands touched revellers who fled. The mirror in the hall showed what the castle had hidden - undead flesh, centuries of solitude compressed into one reflection.
He returned below, no longer lonely in the way he had been - now lonely with knowledge. The castle remains; the masquerade continues elsewhere without him.
Witnesses & Aftermath
No geographic castle matches; the archive places the narrative in Dreamlands border or pure allegory - operational value unchanged for identity-collapse cases.
Several sanitarium patients cited the story verbatim before speaking of mirrors.
Archive Notes
Use in training for personnel who confront their own role in horror. Not every monster is other; some are recognition. Handle mirror exposure gently after field trauma. The Outsider teaches empathy without softening danger.
