Through the Gates of the Silver Key
Yaddith and Beyond - 1929–1934
Carter's silver key opens Yog-Sothoth's gate; his mind rides alien bodies across time while a lawyer's body is left empty in a cave - identity dissolves where the Ultimate Gate stands.
The Gate has opened. I am not Randolph Carter, but a part of something vaster.
Statement attributed to Swami Chandraputra
Overview
Randolph Carter convened scholars, mystics, and heirs at a Virginia cave where the silver key reacted to formulae from the Necronomicon and the Book of Eibon. Yog-Sothoth - as gate and key - answered. Carter's body fell empty while his consciousness rode the wizard Zkauba on distant Yaddith, then farther, toward the Ultimate Gate and a Presence that spoke with cold courtesy.
Identity became negotiable: Carter was Carter, was Zkauba, was traveller, was guest of the Ancient Ones beyond form. The return in a borrowed turbaned body left Boston society uneasy and the archive certain that some doors do not close behind you.
Narrative Record
The cave ritual projected Carter across aeons to a dying world where he wore an insect wizard's flesh and feared the Colour from the aether. Further passage brought him before the Gate where a guide mocked human names and offered truth without mercy.
He glimpsed the Ultimate One and chose return - or was sent back as lesson. The body labeled Swami Chandraputra spoke with Carter's knowledge and something else's distance. Legal death of Carter was never filed; disappearance is cleaner.
Witnesses & Aftermath
Attendees split: some denied, some went mad, some joined Chandraputra's circle. Miskatonic holds censored transcripts. Yaddith is not on any chart; yet Zkauba's memories match Colour Out of Space spectra.
Three attempts to repeat the ritual failed with explosive failure; the cave entrance was sealed.
Archive Notes
Never replicate without Board vote and funeral plans. Yog-Sothoth answers gates, not curiosity. If a returned colleague speaks with too many accents, treat as Carter case: humane contact, no forced unmasking. The Ultimate Gate file is sealed one level above this entry.
