Florida Gulf Coast

A Florida town of Spanish moss and quiet streets where Asenath Waite's inheritance waited and where Edward Pickman Derby's body walked without its rightful tenant after the thing from Innsmouth wore his skin.

Don't believe it if you hear I'm dead - I've got to be careful.

E. P. Derby, note left on doorstep, 1933

Overview

Dunedin on the Florida Gulf is a town of warm air and cold history, where the Waite family held land and reputations tied to Innsmouth by marriage and by features the sun does not explain away. Here Asenath Waite, or the father who wore her shape, drew Edward Derby into rituals of consciousness exchange that ended with a body pounding on a doorstep in Arkham swearing it was not dead while the head inside spoke with voices from the reef.

Dunedin is not Innsmouth, but it is a branch office: salt in the breeze, hybrids in the family albums, and property deeds that pass with wills written in languages the probate court cannot read. The archive monitors because Florida retirees are not the only ones who migrate south when Massachusetts gets too attentive.

Description

Spanish moss drapes oaks along streets that look postcard-peaceful; the Waite house stands back from the road, shutters closed, wells deeper than plumbing requires. Gulf humidity makes mould a constant; some mould patterns resemble script. Neighbours remember Derby's visits: brilliant, afraid, writing letters to Arkham between lessons in body exchange he did not know he was taking.

The coastline nearby offers reefs and night fishing; boats leave without running lights on dates that match Innsmouth tide tables copied into a Dunedin ledger seized in 1934 and sealed.

Historical Record

Derby's marriage to Asenath connected Boston's scholarly elite to Gulf cult bloodlines. His consciousness rode in her body and others' until the final transfer left him trapped and pounding for help. Arkham police shot the body; what crawled out was not Derby. The Dunedin estate was searched; paraphernalia matched Red Hook and Innsmouth seizures.

Subsequent owners report dreams of swimming without learning. The archive maintains a watch list of Waite descendants and Derby correspondents who moved south for climate and found something else breathing the air.

Archive Notes

Do not purchase Waite property. Interview neighbours with Innsmouth protocol questions disguised as historical society outreach. If a resident claims to be dead while standing before you, do not dismiss as metaphor; implement containment. Cross-reference all Gulf Coast hybrid features with Innsmouth genealogies. Dunedin is a reminder that the mythos has vacation homes.
