Elder Thing

Maker of the Shoggoths

The barrel-shaped starfarers who built Pnakotis and bred shoggoths — civilized until their slaves rebelled, preserved in Antarctic stone for fifty million years.

Six feet end to end, three and five-tenths feet central diameter, tapering to one foot at each end.

Prof. Dyer, anatomical summary

Overview

Singular dossier for the species plural file /archive/elder-things records — the Elder Thing as one representative of a race that crossed stars, fought Cthulhu's spawn, raised cities on every continent, and was overthrown by its own lubricious creations. At the Mountains of Madness is their autopsy and their elegy.

They were scientists, artists, explorers — not humane, but comprehensible — until history made them fossils in ice.

Description

Barrel torso, starfish arms and head, five wings, cilia for speech, eyes on stalks. Technology was organic-mechanical: energy without wires, travel without rockets as we know them. They recorded history on walls because books did not survive epochs.

A thawed specimen walked in 1930; Miskatonic's committee suppressed the film.

Historical Record

Dyer's report maps cities under Antarctica, war with R'lyeh, migration to abyssal seas. Shoggoth rebellion ended surface dominance; Yithian mind-swap ended much else. The Elder Things are proof that intelligence does not imply survival.

Wiki merges them with 'Old Ones' from other stories — disambiguate carefully in papers.

Archive Notes

Antarctic protocols unchanged since 1931. Do not thaw without Committee vote. Singular slug exists for search; plural dossier is authoritative for taxonomy.
