Ghoul

Eater of the Dead

Corpse-eating humanoids who trade with dreamers and sing in voices like bark — Lovecraft's underworld citizens, kin to Randolph Carter by adoption if not by blood.

Overview

A ghoul is not a zombie — it has culture, language, packs, and a taste for interment that civilized men find obscene. Lovecraft's ghouls tunnel between cemeteries, worship Mordiggian in some accounts, and bargain with dreamers who know the password. Pickman's Model implies they were once human; Dream-Quest makes them Carter's kin by choice.

Singular slug serves searchers who type 'ghoul lovecraft'; plural /archive/ghouls holds pack behaviour.

Description

Rubbery flesh, doggish face, hoof-like feet, hopping gait, eyes that shine in dark. Speech is bark and English mixed. They strip graves with reverence and humour. They fear ghasts and light and certain names.

Pickman's paintings were photographs of models from below; Boston still denies it.

Historical Record

1927: Pickman vanishes into Warren Street vault. 1943: Carter travels with ghouls to Kadath. Later authors add ghoul politics, ghoul cities, ghoul romance — expanded mythos, dated accordingly.

Do not prosecute ghouls under mortal law; negotiate or flee.

Archive Notes

Warren Street sealed. Dreamers seeking ghoul guides must know the triple phrase from primary text, not from forums.
