The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath
Oneiric Expedition - 1926–1927
Randolph Carter crosses the Dreamlands toward Kadath-on-the-Cold-Waste - through zoogs, ghouls, night-gaunts, and the gods who hide the sunset city he cannot name awake.
At night, when the objective world has slunk away, dreamers go forth to it.
Dreamlands cartography preface
Overview
Randolph Carter - Great War veteran, lifelong dreamer - sought a marvellous city glimpsed in sleep: terraces of gold, domes of lapis, streets fragrant with mystery the waking world denies. Earth's petty gods hid it; Kadath in the cold waste held their secrets.
The Dreamlands kill. Carter crossed the Enchanted Wood, Dylath-Leen, ghoul catacombs, and Leng's plateau where moon-beasts trade in slaves. He learned Earth's gods are cruel children beside powers that laugh at them.
Narrative Record
Zoogs stole maps; ghouls allied after Carter honoured Pickman; Men of Leng blocked passes with silk and blades. Nyarlathotep - soul of the Outer Gods' messenger - offered escort with smiles that were masks over predation.
At Kadath's castle Carter learned the sunset city was memory of home transfigured - Boston, Arkham, hills of youth - denied because he knew too much. The gods sent him back; dream geography shifted for every sensitive reader afterward.
Witnesses & Aftermath
Carter's friends noted trances that left him thin. Pickman's ghoul courtesy corroborates Boston incidents. Miskatonic students who read early typescript shared dreams of onyx ships.
The archive treats the novel as cartography, not fiction - coordinates for oneiric intrusion.
Archive Notes
Dream research requires Carter protocols: never bargain with masked guides; respect ghoul etiquette; do not whistle where night-gaunts nest. Kadath expeditions denied. If you recognize childhood streets in dreams and cannot reach them, stop - the city is bait.
