In the Vault
Tale of the Tomb & the Undertaker
An undertaker trapped overnight in a tomb scratches his way out through a coffin lid - only to discover whose body he has desecrated and what revenge awaits.
Overview
In the Vault is Lovecraft in rural gothic mode before cosmic scale consumed him: no gods, only guilt, masonry, and a coffin lid. George Birch, incompetent undertaker, is locked in a receiving tomb and escapes by clawing through the top of a coffin - a practical solution with impractical consequences.
The story matters to fans because it is tightly plotted, grimly funny, and set firmly in Lovecraft Country soil.
Historical Record
Written in 1925 for Tryout; revised for later publication. Often anthologized as a palate cleanser between heavier mythos tales.
No mythos entities appear; archive classification is standalone gothic incident.
Archive Notes
Useful introduction for readers who find cosmic horror too abstract. Pair with Pickman's Model for New England morbidity without cults.
