The Cats of Ulthar

Dreamlands - Ulthar

In Ulthar, where no man may kill a cat, villagers learn why - when orphaned boy and caravan witness the old cotter couple's fate and the cats' revenge under moonlight.

In Ulthar, before ever the burgesses forbade the killing of cats, there dwelt an old cotter and his wife who trapped and slew their neighbours' cats.

Dreamlands oral law

Overview

Ulthar in the Dreamlands holds a law older than its burgesses: no man may kill a cat. The law was written in one night when cats from every roof flowed to a cottage where an old couple had trapped travellers' pets for rites the story does not need to name - only that the cats remember.

An orphan boy who saw too much and a caravan of wanderers survived to tell Menes, who would become priest-king, why the law must endure.

Narrative Record

The cotters' cottage stood alone; screams of captured cats ended when the moon rose and every feline in Ulthar surrounded the walls. By dawn the couple was gone - bones picked clean, no human trial required.

The burgesses ordained the prohibition; Menes ordained the myth. Carter later passed through Ulthar courteous to cats; the ghouls respect what Ulthar punishes.

Witnesses & Aftermath

Dreamers who insult cats in Ulthar wake with scratches that do not heal in waking medicine. Arkham's stray-cat colonies show unexplained migration patterns on lunar nights.

The incident is classified as Dreamlands justice, not cult activity - rare mercy in these files.

Archive Notes

Mandatory courtesy in oneiric travel: do not harm cats in Ulthar or anywhere Carter frequented. What seems folkloric enforces balance predators respect. Even in cosmic horror, some laws are local and absolute.
