Overview

Professor Albert Wilmarth of Miskatonic's English department began 1928 as a skeptic of backwoods folklore and ended as a man who knew the hills of Vermont conceal observatories not built by any government on Earth. Anonymous letters, then signed correspondence with Henry Wentworth Akeley, described winged entities in the dark, strange prints in mud, and voices that whispered from the woods without moving lips.

What Wilmarth took for superstition proved to be diplomacy. The Mi-Go - fungoid beings from beyond the galaxy - had established mining and research stations in the Green Mountains. They did not hate humanity. They regarded it as material: brains removed, preserved in cylinders, shipped to worlds whose names bruise the tongue.

Narrative Record

Akeley's letters grew urgent: his dogs killed, his servants fled, his farmhouse besieged by things that carried off livestock and left phosphorescence on stone. He sent photographs of clawed tracks and a black stone covered in symbols the Necronomicon would recognize. Wilmarth visited in September 1928 and found the house too quiet, the chair too occupied, the voice too smooth.

The entity wearing Akeley's face offered travel among the stars if Wilmarth would abandon the body. The real Akeley - what remained - lay in a cylinder in the attic, still thinking, still pleading without a mouth. Wilmarth fled by truck while winged shapes pursued through floodlight and thunder. He reached Arkham with his manuscript and his sanity, both damaged in different ways.

Witnesses & Aftermath

Wilmarth resigned his correspondence with the public and entered restricted teaching. Vermont farmers continue to report lights on hills the maps call empty. Federal surveys of the Akeley property found equipment that should not have existed in 1928 and soil samples that fluoresced under ultraviolet light.

The Mi-Go did not withdraw. They adapted - fewer abductions in daylight, more recruitment through scholars who believe they are studying meteorites. The archive cross-references this incident with every subsequent disappearance of rural intellectuals within fifty miles of a university.
