Church of Starry Wisdom
Congregation of the Haunter
A Providence congregation that worshipped through the Shining Trapezohedron - until the Haunter of the Dark destroyed them from within and left a steeple that Blake's curiosity would later reopen.
Overview
The Church of Starry Wisdom occupied a Federal Hill steeple built without windows - a black stone finger pointing at stars that conventional astronomy does not chart. Its congregation, led by Professor Enoch Bowen and later by Edwin M. Lillibridge, worshipped the Crawling Chaos through a gem that held light without source: the Shining Trapezohedron. They are gone. The gem persists. The Haunter persists.
The archive treats the Church as a case study in how Nyarlathotep receives worship under other names and how curiosity finishes what fanaticism began.
Description
Services involved the trapezohedron placed on a tripod while congregants meditated on darkness. The Haunter - winged, light-avoidant, linked in some texts to Hastur and in others to Nyarlathotep as emissary - could not enter a lit world. The Church kept the steeple dark, the gem fed, and journalists who investigated too closely disappeared.
Lillibridge died in 1877 trying to steal the stone; the Church dissolved amid scandal and unexplained odours. The building stood empty until artists and students rediscovered it in the twentieth century.
Historical Record
Bowen founded the congregation in 1844 after returning from Egypt with artefacts that should have remained buried. Thirty-three years of activity left a trail of missing persons, phosphorescent mists, and a steeple that surveyors' lines avoid. Robert Blake's 1935 death and the lightning strike that same night closed the public chapter; Dr. Ambrose Dexter's possession of the gem opened another.
Cross-reference with Ward/Curwen materials: the Church is mentioned in Providence's occult geography as contemporary with earlier necromancies.
Archive Notes
Do not conduct night photography of the steeple site. Trapezohedron custody is ART-001. Personnel researching Nyarlathotep must read this file to understand avatar worship. Light discipline is literal: fifty thousand lumens minimum for emergency response.
