Danforth

Antarctic Expedition Survivor

The only expedition member besides Dyer to enter the Elder Thing city and return - and the only one who flew beyond the peaks and saw what shattered his mind, leaving him with a laugh that will not stay buried.

Overview

Danforth is the name the archive uses when it must speak of the cost of seeing too much without the buffer of geological jargon. He accompanied Dyer into the stone city, read the frescoes, heard the piping of a shoggoth in the dark, and later flew with Dyer over the highest black peaks - where he saw something that the report describes only in italics and ellipses.

He returned. His sanity did not.

Biography

Younger than Dyer, trained in a discipline the public report obscures, Danforth was chosen for the final descent into the ruins because he was steady - until he was not. In the city he showed courage, documenting glyphs, matching Elder Thing biology to mural sequences, walking through five-pointed archways that predated humanity.

On the return flight he looked past the city toward the void beyond the range. Dyer writes that Danforth saw something he should not have seen - a mountain profile, a hint of Kadath, a colour beyond the spectrum - and that the sight produced a laugh that recurs in sanitariums and on bad nights.

Historical Record

Danforth's current residence is protected information. Dyer's appeal to suppress Antarctic exploration was written partly to protect Danforth from interrogation by those who would treat his laugh as a map.

The archive has twelve hours of dictated recollection, taken before the worst silence set in. They are classified under Protocol Theta and referenced only to warn, never to guide.

Archive Notes

Do not request interview without psychiatric team present. The phrase 'Tekeli-li' is a known trigger. Danforth is not a curiosity; he is a casualty whose continued life is an ethical burden on the university. Assign no guilt for his condition; assign responsibility for keeping the peaks empty.
